About this station
According to Wikipedia, this is the world’s oldest actively-operating railway station.
It opened in 1830 as part of the original Liverpool & Manchester railway, along with Manchester Crown Street and Edge Hill. The former closed and the latter was resited.
The disused Liverpool Loop Line route is to the east of the station
Broadgreen Hospital and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital are both to the north of the station. (The area is written as Broadgreen for some unknown reason)
Platforms
Liverpool bound platform 1 - station building on Bowring Park Road
Manchester bound platform 2 - Old Thomas Lane side, footpath from lane to platform, seems fairly level but not very wide
Current accessibility
There are some messages I’m struggling to disentangle about accessibility.
The subway and the ticket office are closed until Winter 2024 as the station is being made accessible. As Platform 1 at the station is inaccessible and unstaffed, customers with accessibility requirements are advised to call the Northern Trains Customer Experience team (National Rail Enquiries) PLEASE NOTE _ This station is closed and unstaffed until Winter 2024 for major refurbishment - To Liverpool platform : level access from street level. To Wigan platform via footpath from Seymour Road or Jubilee Avenue from ticket office under road bridge and first left, 500 metres. Or via underpass 32 steps level under the track then 30 steps. (Northern - ?)
The station has step-free access to both platforms via separate entrances on each side. There is a subway between platforms with stairs which is closed, despite Northern’s incorrect information. I’m not clear why platform 1 is apparently inaccessible (demolition of old station building which provided level access from the street?)
There is a long walking route between platforms at street level.
As the station is unstaffed, MerseyRail and Northern say it’s not accessible to wheelchair users as there seems to be no ramp service.
I’m not sure why Northern say it’s closed. - National Rail say that the ticket office and subway are closed, but implies the station is still open.

Progress
Working with Strzala Architects, Northern Trains’ project will involve the demolition of the existing station building and the creation of a larger, modern replacement.
The new station building will feature a range of accessible facilities including a waiting room, toilets and a ticket office counter.
Access to the station will also be improved through the installation of two passenger lifts and a ramp to the Old Thomas Lane entrance
(Place North West)
Work began at Broad Green on the lift shafts, and the subway was closed off, meaning passengers currently have to arrive on the correct side of the station at street level.
Then, work got stuck.
Childwallblues, a RailUKForums member, has reported that:
the contractor has been kicked off site for breach of Health & Safety, no replacement contractor has been appointed and the completion date has now been put back three months to Spring 2025. As this project commenced in May 2023 it is a sorry state of affairs.
